In addition to our performances, events and learning programme, the Barn supports a variety of national artists to develop new works through our Artist’s Residency programme. We also encourage creative Academic research partnerships, and have a strong working relationship with both the universities in Aberdeen. Our current artist-in-residence is John Newling.
Continuing his residency at the Barn, John Newling will further explore elements introduced and installed during his Soil Lab week a few weeks ago, including his beautifully made ‘soil bowls’.
For the last year the artist has also been writing short letters to Nature. The ‘Dear Nature’ letters are reflections and questions about the state of Newling’s relationship with Nature. Can one partner really make amends for such unreasonable behaviour? Can an irretrievable breakdown be avoided? What is the postal address for Nature anyway? All will be revealed as Newling constructs these letters as hand written, embroidered and printed texts.
