Third stage was set up at Woodend Barn eleven years ago to provide high quality workshops in the arts for older people in the Banchory area. The choir, under the leadership of Rita Maclean meets on Mondays and the Arts group is on Wednesdays. All sessions cost £3 each. A contribution is requested for tea/coffee.
Third Stage also has an allotment.
The Wednesday programme is devised, organised and run by the committee, which is drawn from members of the group. We employ professional local artists who provide challenging experiences in painting in various media, drawing, dance and movement, felt making, music, drama, poetry etc. The emphasis is always more on doing than watching but we do have occasional lectures. Topics have, for example, included art history, photography, silversmithing, sculpture and architecture.
Recent Wednesdays have involved the group exploring willow weaving, book making, painting, collage, beadwork and drama.
This year the group has been working on a project with our Artist in Residence, Deirdre Nelson, an internationally recognized embroidery and textile artist. We moved from discussion and exploration to drawing from nature and creating patterns which have been digitally printed on fabric. We hope to produce items for sale in the future.
Leading on from their workshops on Mondays, the choir goes out into the community to entertain other groups.
